Air Fryer Hash Browns

Air Fryer Hash Browns (Crispy & Golden)

Why Make Hash Browns in an Air Fryer?

Air fryers cook hash browns with much less oil than pan-frying while still making them crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. They’re perfect for breakfast, brunch, or even as a side dish.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 large russet potatoes (best for crispiness)

  • 1–2 tablespoons olive oil or vegetable oil

  • ½ teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)

  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Optional Seasonings (Choose Any)

  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder

  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder

  • ¼ teaspoon paprika

  • A pinch of chili powder (for heat)

  • Dried herbs like parsley or thyme

Equipment Needed

  • Air fryer

  • Box grater or food processor

  • Large bowl

  • Clean kitchen towel or cheesecloth

  • Mixing spoon

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Potatoes

  1. Wash the potatoes thoroughly to remove dirt.

  2. Peel them if you prefer smoother hash browns (peeling is optional).

  3. Grate the potatoes using the large holes of a box grater or a food processor.

Step 2: Remove Excess Starch (Very Important!)

  1. Place the grated potatoes into a large bowl.

  2. Fill the bowl with cold water and gently stir.

  3. Drain the water and repeat once more until the water looks clearer.

  4. Transfer the potatoes to a clean towel or cheesecloth.

  5. Squeeze as much water as possible. This step helps make the hash browns crispy instead of soggy.

Step 3: Season the Potatoes

  1. Put the dried grated potatoes back into the bowl.

  2. Add oil, salt, pepper, and any optional seasonings.

  3. Mix well so the potatoes are evenly coated.

Step 4: Preheat the Air Fryer

  • Preheat your air fryer to 380°F (193°C) for 3–5 minutes.

  • Lightly grease the air fryer basket to prevent sticking.

Step 5: Cook the Hash Browns

  1. Spread the potato mixture evenly in the air fryer basket.

    • Do not overcrowd—cook in batches if needed.

  2. Air fry at 380°F (193°C) for 10 minutes.

  3. Open the air fryer and flip or stir the hash browns.

  4. Continue cooking for another 8–12 minutes until golden brown and crispy.

Step 6: Final Crisp (Optional)

  • For extra crispiness, increase the temperature to 400°F (204°C) and cook for 2–3 more minutes.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve hot with ketchup, hot sauce, or sour cream.

  • Pair with eggs, toast, or avocado for breakfast.

  • Add shredded cheese on top during the last 2 minutes for cheesy hash browns.

Tips for Best Results

  • Russet potatoes work best due to low moisture.

  • Drying the potatoes thoroughly is the key to crispiness.

  • Don’t stack the potatoes too thick in the basket.

  • Shake or flip halfway for even cooking.

Variations

  • Cheesy Hash Browns: Mix in shredded cheddar before cooking.

  • Veggie Hash Browns: Add finely chopped onions or bell peppers.

  • Spicy Hash Browns: Add cayenne or red pepper flakes.
